Hotel Mistral in Vathy – peaceful days on Meganisi
A small hotel that suits Meganisi
The Mistral Boutique Hotel had already caught our attention before we stayed there for the first time. During an earlier visit to Meganisi, we passed it in Vathy and immediately liked the small hotel. We liked its location at the entrance to the village, the greenery around it and its small scale. So when we later returned to Meganisi, we deliberately chose the Hotel Mistral in Vathy.
At first, we stayed for just a few days and were pleasantly surprised by how much we enjoyed it. Even though it was high season and the hotel was fully booked, we found it calm and relaxed. In the end, we were even able to extend our stay at short notice. We have since returned for a second stay, this time shortly before the start of the season. Even at this quieter time of year, we enjoyed the Mistral just as much.
What we like about this hotel is difficult to pin down to one particular thing. It is more the combination of its location, the well-kept property, the family atmosphere and a pleasant simplicity that fits Meganisi so well.

A quiet location at the entrance to Vathy
The Mistral is right at the entrance to Vathy and is surrounded by a surprising amount of greenery. The harbour basin is practically just across the road, yet during both of our stays we found the entire hotel pleasantly quiet. Even when it was fully booked in high season, it never felt hectic.
At the same time, Vathy begins just outside the hotel. From the hotel, it is only a few steps before you can start strolling along the waterfront through the village. Tavernas, bars, kafenia and small shops line the harbour promenade, while fishing boats, sailing boats and yachts lie side by side in the harbour.
We especially like Vathy in the evening. As the heat slowly fades and the promenade begins to fill, the village takes on a lovely, relaxed atmosphere. From the Mistral, you can simply head out on foot and be in the middle of it all within a few minutes, without actually staying in the livelier part of the harbour.
Our room overlooking the greenery
The rooms at the Mistral have private balconies and, depending on the category, overlook either the marina or the green hills behind the hotel. Our room had a balcony overlooking the large garden and the wooded hills beyond. We particularly loved the view in the morning.
We also liked the room itself. Everything was clean, well maintained and pleasantly simple. It felt neither cluttered nor impersonal and was exactly the right place to unwind after a day exploring the island.
Family-run and pleasantly personal
The Mistral is a family-run hotel, and you can feel it. During our stays, we also got to know the owners, a father and daughter who both work at the hotel. We found both of them exceptionally friendly and pleasant.
The atmosphere throughout the hotel was very relaxed. Whether it was the owners or the other members of staff, everyone was friendly, calm and attentive without ever being intrusive. If you needed something, someone was there; otherwise, guests were simply given their space.
During our first stay, when we spontaneously decided to remain on Meganisi a little longer, they managed to find a solution for us despite the hotel being very busy. That too was handled easily and without any fuss. This quiet, natural willingness to help is something we still remember.
A small breakfast made with care
Breakfast at the Mistral also fits what we like about smaller hotels. The buffet was not huge, but it was thoughtfully put together and had everything we needed in the morning. Rather than trying to offer as much choice as possible, everything felt carefully selected.
The hotel’s current website mentions Greek yoghurt, seasonal fruit, cheese, homemade cakes and jams, as well as freshly prepared egg dishes. We usually ordered fried eggs, and the woman preparing breakfast always made them just the way we liked them. At some point, we had to laugh at ourselves for looking forward so much to something so simple each morning.
It is only a small detail, but these are often the things that stay with you longer than an enormous breakfast buffet. We like this kind of simplicity when what is offered is made with care.
Terraces overlooking the harbour
At the Mistral, you do not have to walk into the village if you want something to eat or drink. In addition to breakfast, the hotel serves food and drinks during the day and in the evening.
The terraces at the front of the hotel are especially pleasant. There are several comfortable places to sit, with views towards the harbour. The greenery surrounding the terraces makes it feel relaxed despite being so close to the water and the village. You can have breakfast there in the morning, stop for something to eat later in the day or simply stay a little longer over a drink.
This is one of the things we liked about the Mistral’s location: we could sit comfortably at the hotel while still seeing a little of what was happening around the harbour.
Meganisi is easy to explore from here
The location also works well as a base for exploring the island. Meganisi is small, so getting around does not take long. From Vathy, Katomeri, Spartochori and the island’s various beaches can all be reached quickly by car or scooter.
If you arrive without your own vehicle, you can also hire a scooter in Vathy. It is an especially easy way to explore Meganisi: the roads between the villages are short, and it often takes only a few minutes to get from the harbour to different parts of the coast.
In the evening, however, you can simply leave the vehicle parked. From the Mistral, the tavernas, bars and kafenia along the harbour are all within easy walking distance. And if you prefer to stay at the hotel, you can just as easily have something to eat on one of the terraces and spend the evening there.
A hotel in tune with the rhythm of the island
After our two stays, we feel that the Mistral suits Meganisi very well. Not because anything there feels staged or because the hotel tries to impress with as many facilities and services as possible. In fact, we liked it for exactly the opposite reason.
The hotel is small, well kept and personally run. The owners and staff create a relaxed atmosphere, breakfast is uncomplicated and carefully prepared, and you can sit for a while on the terraces overlooking the harbour. At the same time, Vathy practically begins right outside the door.
That combination first caught our attention when we passed the hotel and later brought us back for a second stay.

Evenings: The tavernas, bars, kafenia and shops around the harbour are all within easy walking distance. If you do not feel like going out, you can also eat directly at the Mistral.
Our experience: We stayed at the Mistral both during high season and shortly before the start of the season. We enjoyed both stays, each in a slightly different way.
