Η ΨΑΘΑ (Psatha) in Preveza

Greek food we keep coming back for
There are restaurants we visit once and enjoy. And then there are others where, at some point, the question of whether we will go back simply no longer comes up.
For us, Psatha in Preveza has definitely become one of those places. When we are in Preveza, feel like Greek food and do not want to spend much time deciding where to go, we quite often end up here.
Not because the restaurant is particularly fancy or built around a certain concept. Quite the opposite. Psatha is pleasantly uncomplicated. Inside, it is simple and practical; outside, you sit beneath bougainvillea along the small stone-paved lanes of the old town.
But the real reason we keep coming back is what arrives on the table.
Quick info: Psatha in Preveza
Location: Preveza, Epirus
Ideal for: traditional Greek home-style cooking and anyone who enjoys trying different dishes
Good to know: Many dishes are prepared in advance and displayed in the counter. What is available changes from day to day.
Best time: If you want the widest possible choice of home-cooked dishes, it is better not to arrive too late. Particularly popular dishes may already be sold out later in the day.
Unfiltered tip: Don’t decide in advance what you want to order. We usually take a look at what has been cooked that day first – and sometimes we simply let someone recommend something.

A counter full of home-style Greek dishes
When you walk into Psatha, you quickly understand what this place is about.
A large part of the selection consists of home-style Greek dishes – food cooked slowly in a pot, braised or prepared in the oven, just as you find it in everyday Greek cooking. Several dishes are ready in the display counter, and what is available changes from day to day.
That is precisely what we like so much.
On one visit, there might be stuffed vegetables, an oven-baked dish or meat in sauce; the next time, we discover something completely different. Depending on the day, there are other dishes from Greek cuisine as well.
That is why we do not even try to order the same thing every time.
We eat something different every time
Even after many visits, we still could not say which dish is our favourite.
We try something different each time. Usually, we only decide once we are there and have taken a look at what is available, and quite often we discover something we have never tried before.
Sometimes the waiter even takes part of the decision out of our hands. There have been occasions when he clearly seemed to have a pretty good idea of what we should eat that day – and a small surprise simply appeared on the table.
So far, there has not been anything we did not enjoy. Even so, we could not say which dish was the best.
That is exactly why we do not want to make a list here of dishes you absolutely have to try. After all, something completely different may be available the next time you visit.
Simple inside, bougainvillea outside
The interior of Psatha is simple and practical.
Tables, chairs, the counter with the food – nothing feels as though it has been specially staged for visitors. Nor is there any attempt to turn a traditional Greek restaurant into something modern or particularly stylised.
We find that very pleasant.
Outside, the atmosphere is different again. The tables stand beneath bougainvillea, directly along the small stone-paved lanes in this part of Preveza. From your table, you naturally pick up on whatever is happening in the surrounding streets.
Who you find at the tables
One thing that stands out at Psatha is the mix of guests.
At one table, there may be a large Greek family, a couple at the next, and visitors from abroad a few tables further along. At lunchtime, people also come in on their own, perhaps during their lunch break. Younger and older guests sit side by side just as naturally as locals and visitors.
In between, people from Preveza regularly stop by just to pick something up. They see what has been cooked that day, order something and take their food home.
This mix is a big part of the atmosphere at Psatha. We never felt out of place here, even on our first visit. You sit down, are welcomed warmly and quickly feel as though you simply belong.
A restaurant with a long history
Psatha has been part of Preveza’s restaurant scene for decades and is run by the Kyriaki family.
We do not really need much more history than that here.
What we particularly like is that you never get the feeling that the restaurant’s past has to be constantly explained or put on display. Instead, you notice it in the way so many things simply continue as they have for years: in the prepared dishes behind the counter, in the people who stop by to pick up food to take home and in a way of eating that has clearly been part of this place for a long time.
Why we keep coming back
By now, we have visited many restaurants in Preveza. We like some of them very much, while others are places we choose on particular days or for particular dishes.
Psatha has become something different for us.
It is one of those places where we do not have to think for long. We never know exactly what we are going to eat beforehand, and that has become part of the experience. Perhaps we will discover something behind the counter that we have never tried before. Perhaps someone will recommend something we would never have chosen ourselves.
Places like this are part of what we particularly like about Greece. Not because the place is deliberately trying to feel “authentic”, but because so many things still exist naturally side by side: the food, the people, the simple interior and everyday life all around.
We often feel most comfortable in places where there is no attempt to make everything more modern, more international or more geared towards visitors.
For us, Psatha is one of those places.
