The Forgotten City High Above the Ionian Sea
Some places impress not through perfect staging, but through the feeling they leave behind. Kassope in Epirus is one of those places.
High above the coast, among hills, wildflowers, and olive trees, lie the remains of a city founded more than 2,300 years ago. Its location alone is impressive: a high plateau with wide views over Epirus, the Ambracian Gulf, and the Ionian Sea.
An Ancient City with a View
Kassope was founded in the 4th century BC and was once one of the most important cities in the region. Many foundations, streets, and parts of the agora have survived to this day. Between the old stone paths, it quickly feels as if an entire world once existed up here.
Unlike many well-known ancient sites, Kassope feels remarkably quiet and almost forgotten.
No crowds. No noise. Just wind, cicadas, and open landscape.
The Ancient Theater of Kassope
The ancient theater is especially impressive. The old stone steps climb up the hillside, while the landscape of Epirus opens up behind them. From the upper rows, the view reaches all the way to the sea.
Today, it is quiet up there. Wildflowers grow between the stones, the wind moves through the ruins, and the mountains slowly blur into the blue of the sky.
Here, history and landscape do not feel separate from each other — they simply belong together.
Between Ruins and Nature
While walking through Kassope, new details keep appearing: small stone walls among the grasses, ancient paths, open spaces, and wide views across the landscape.
Many parts of the city are still surprisingly easy to recognize, while at the same time much of it feels as if nature is slowly reclaiming the place.
That is where a large part of this place’s atmosphere lies.
The End of the Ancient City
Kassope reached its peak in the 3rd century BC. After the Roman conquests, however, the city gradually lost its importance. Later, many of its inhabitants had to move to the newly founded city of Nicopolis, after which Kassope was slowly abandoned.
Today, one thing above all remains: quiet.
A Different View of Greece
Kassope is one of the most impressive places in Epirus. Not because of major tourist sights or spectacular staging, but because of its unique mix of openness, history, and quiet.
Between ancient stones, wildflowers, and views stretching all the way to the Ionian Sea, a different side of Greece emerges here — calm, open, and full of atmosphere.
