Along the Harbor Promenade in Preveza

Right across from the harbor promenade in Preveza is a place many people would probably simply drive past. An old concrete entrance, faded lettering, a closed-off site, and behind it a large open area slowly being reclaimed by grass and plants.

Above the entrance, it says in Greek:

ΣΤΡΑΤΟΠΕΔΟ ΣΟΛΩΜΟΥ

„Stratopedo Solomou“

Translated, this roughly means “Solomou Barracks” or “Solomou Military Camp.”

Between a Harbor Town and Military History

Due to its location on the Ambracian Gulf, Preveza has always been a strategically important place. The town connects the Ionian Sea with the inner gulf and, for many decades, played a military role in the region.

Even today, military facilities, airfields, and former barracks sites can still be found around Preveza. The grounds of the Solomou Barracks are one of these quiet remnants of another time.

Much suggests that the site has since been abandoned or is now only partly used. The crumbling concrete, faded lettering, and empty spaces feel almost frozen in time.

Just a few meters away, people sit in cafés along the promenade, drink coffee, or walk by the water. Directly opposite, this old site lies quietly in the sun.

Between modern cafés, harbor atmosphere, and abandoned buildings, small scenes emerge that tell much more about a town than perfect tourist sights ever could.

Raw, Quiet, and Overlooked

Today, the entrance feels almost forgotten. Weathered concrete, old typography, and empty spaces meet Mediterranean plants and bright summer light. Nothing about it feels staged. And that is exactly why this place feels so authentic and unfiltered.

Not perfectly restored.
