At the Harbour Promenade of Preveza

Directly opposite the harbour promenade of Preveza stands a place that many people would probably simply drive past. An old concrete entrance, faded lettering, a closed-off area and, behind it, a large open space slowly being reclaimed by grass and plants.

Above the entrance, it says in Greek:

ΣΤΡΑΤΟΠΕΔΟ ΣΟΛΩΜΟΥ

“Stratopedo Solomou”

Translated, this roughly means “Solomou Barracks” or “Solomou Military Camp.”

Note About the Place

The area feels abandoned, but it is not a classic place to visit. Its atmosphere is mainly experienced from the outside: through the old entrance, the faded lettering, the weathered buildings and the strong contrast with the lively harbour promenade directly opposite.

For that reason, this place belongs more to the small traces in the cityscape of Preveza than to a classic excursion spot. You do not need to enter it to feel its atmosphere.

Between Harbour Town and Military History

Because of its location on the Ambracian Gulf, Preveza has always been a strategically important place. The town connects the Ionian Sea with the inner gulf and, for many decades, played a military role in the region.

Even today, there are still military facilities, airfields and former barracks areas around Preveza. The site of the Solomou Barracks belongs to these quiet remnants of another time.

What to Keep in Mind

The former barracks are best experienced from the outside. The appeal is not in entering the site, but in looking at the old entrance, the buildings and the quiet open space behind the gate.

Anyone walking along the promenade of Preveza will almost notice the place in passing. This casual impression is exactly what makes it interesting: it does not stand apart from the town, but right next to its present-day everyday life.

Please respect barriers, fences and private or inaccessible areas. The place may appear abandoned, but it remains part of the cityscape and should be viewed from a distance.
